After a busy three days of noise and bluster, the 42nd running of the Tokyo Motorcycle Show came to an end. Some of what I saw made me smile. Some of it made me shudder. At the end of it all, I came away with the feeling that the industry isn’t really clear on where it wants to go. If there were an overall theme that I’d have to ascribe to the show, it’d be customization.

Team Green has a number of Japan-only offerings that are squarely placed in the retro category. The ZRX1200 once graced North American soil, yet carries on in DAEG trim for the domestic market. Other retro-oriented models also exist, as the genre is quite popular among riders in Japan. The W800 is a domestic model that has been in the lineup for ages and shows no signs of going away soon.

Honda is being rather tight-lipped about this model, not having a shred of press material on hand. There is just a bike, shorn with heavily used rubber, and as they did at the EICMA show, it is caked with dirt that the reps are quick to tell you is the real deal.
