BMW has announced updates to its C400 GT scooter, and says the machine will come to the Canadian market for 2025.
It’s great news for Canadian step-through fans, because they have a lot less choice than we saw a decade ago. Maxi-scooters are dead here, and machines like this mid-range 400 are the best we can get here.
But don’t be fooled; if you get a C400 GT, you aren’t settling. This machine is packed with new features for 2025, although the engine itself isn’t changing, at least not much. BMW says the water-cooled single is homologated to Euro 5+ emissions standards. It makes 34 hp at 7,500 rpm and 26 lb-ft of torque at 5,750 rpm. Not a tire-shredding powerhouse, but enough to haul you along with traffic on the highway.
The upgrades are mostly related to tech safety features.
That list starts with a lean-angle sensitive ABS Pro and Dynamic Brake Control. Dynamic Brake Control is a safety system linked to onboard sensors that determine how hard the scooter is braking. If it detects hard braking at the same time as a throttle opening, it cuts throttle response, thereby avoiding a braking-and-accelerating-at-the-same-time scenario, something more likely on a twist-and-go machine than a motorcycle with a clutch. If the DBC system detects deceleration at an extremely rapid rate, it will initiate emergency lighting on the scooter, to warn other motorists.
The traction control system is now lean angle-sensitive as well. And to control these electronic features, you have a 6.25-inch TFT screen, which can be upgraded to a 10.25-inch screen. This allows a split screen function so you can watch navigation or control music playback while also keeping an eye on your speedo, rpm, etc.; the Connectivity Pro system means you can control your phone’s calls and texts as well as listen to tunes.
BMW also has an alarm system available as optional add-on, with remote control for activation/deactivation. Another cool feature that will be practical for commuting or even touring is a luggage rack that locks in a 43.5-liter topcase. The case has an internal USB charger that helps keep your devices powered up. Add in more storage space in the fairing and under the seat as well, with 12 liters of extra space all-in.
One other update that’s standard equipment: A manually-adjusted windshield.
Add it all up and you’ve got a scoot that’s a big update from your Honda Ruckus. MSRP starts at $9,945 in Canada next year; for more details, see BMW’s website. You can also see BMW’s launch video below, along with the C400 X, which is not coming here for 2025.
